U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Statement on President Trump’s Nominee for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), released the following statement on her decision not to support President Trump’s nominee for United States Secretary of Labor, Eugene Scalia:

“I had an opportunity to meet with Mr. Scalia and participate in a Senate HELP Committee hearing on what I feel is a rushed nomination process.

“The leader of the Department of Labor should be someone who has proven experience acting on behalf of workers, but President Trump’s nominee has a long record of working on behalf of powerful corporations, and against workers.

“This nominee is the wrong choice because workers, whistleblowers and union members need a Secretary of Labor who will fight for them on many important issues like worker rights, workplace safety, and discrimination and harassment in the workplace. Working families need someone running the Labor Department for them, not for the big corporations that already have too much power and influence in Washington.”
