Senator Tammy Baldwin Votes to Support Ukraine and Impose Sanctions on Russia

Washington D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin voted today to support the President’s strong actions in mobilizing a global coalition to assist Ukraine through its difficult transition towards democracy and economic stability, as well as to confront Russia’s dangerous and unwarranted invasion of Ukraine. The bipartisan bill passed the Senate by voice vote.
“This bipartisan action shows we can come together in Congress to defend our national security interests and relationships, and to support the democracy and security of our allies abroad,” said Baldwin.  “The Ukrainian people have the right to chart their own course, free from intimidation and intervention from Russia. Putin’s recent action in Ukraine is a clear violation of international law and Ukrainian sovereignty. This legislation gives America more tools to make sure Putin pays a price for the path he has chosen, while offering security and economic assistance to Ukraine.  The President is right to build international support to isolate Russian and provide support for the Ukrainian people and now the Congress has taken action to help these efforts. Going forward, it is vitally important that the Administration continues to work to build international backing and sustain bipartisan consensus in Congress for our response to Putin’s misguided and irresponsible act of aggression.”
The bipartisan bill, H.R. 4152, authorizes assistance to Ukraine to help the country recover from an economic downturn and to withstand the recent Russian invasion and annexation of Crimea. This legislation authorizes essential loan guarantees and aid to Ukraine. It also provides broad authority for the President to sanction individuals in Ukraine and Russia who are responsible for violence and serious human rights abuses, as well as those who are involved in corruption in either country.
