U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Votes to Stop Trump Lawsuit to Overturn the Affordable Care Act, Senate Republicans Support Terminating People’s Health Care
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin joined her Democratic colleagues in the Senate in voting for Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s bill to block Attorney General Barr and the Justice Department from supporting President Trump’s lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act in the Supreme Court. The vote was 51-43 and the measure did not receive the 60 votes needed to pass.
“We have a public health crisis that has gotten worse because of President Trump’s failed leadership, and his only plan is to support a lawsuit to take people’s health care away and eliminate protections for people with pre-existing conditions,” said Senator Baldwin. “Today, I voted to stop this Republican lawsuit that aims to overturn the Affordable Care Act completely. With today’s vote, Senate Republicans made it clear that they support terminating people’s health care during a pandemic. They cannot be trusted to protect health care for millions of Americans, including the more than 2 million Wisconsinites with a pre-existing health condition.”
If the lawsuit led by the Trump Administration’s Department of Justice is successful, millions of Americans could lose their health care coverage and their pre-existing condition protections in the middle of a pandemic. The Supreme Court will hear this lawsuit on November 10th and if confirmed Judge Barrett could participate in the court’s decision.
