U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Supports Grant for University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Educational Opportunity Center

$236,900 in TRIO funding will help expand opportunity for disadvantaged and underrepresented students

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin applauded the Department of Education’s announcement to award the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee $236,900 in TRIO grant funding. The funding will go towards the University’s Educational Opportunity Center in order to assist the Center in sustained efforts to increase access to postsecondary education for adults from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds. This announcement comes after Baldwin wrote a letter of support for UWM's application.

“Every American should have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and it’s important that we make investments that expand opportunity in Milwaukee,” said Senator Baldwin. “I was proud to support this investment in UWM’s Educational Opportunity Center because it is working to make a difference in people’s lives.”

“The UWM EOC staff is excited about the opportunity to serve Milwaukee residents for another five years; and hope our contribution will impact both the individual adults we serve, and the community at large raising awareness about the benefits of continuing education to the post-secondary level,” said UWM Educational Opportunity Center Director Rita Luswata-Muwonge.

Senator Baldwin has long been a supporter of increasing access to postsecondary education, including through TRIO programs.  In March, for the third consecutive year, Baldwin co-led a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee calling for strong funding for TRIO in this year’s funding bills.  In addition, Baldwin’s In The Red Act will allow student loan borrowers to refinance outstanding debt at lower rates, increase Pell Grants to keep pace with rising costs and make a new investment in community college.
