U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Statement on Trump Administration Plan to Expand Junk Insurance Plans

We can’t let big insurance companies rewrite the rules on guaranteed health care protections that people depend on

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin released the following statement on the Trump administration issuing a final rule to expand junk health insurance plans:

“We cannot let the Trump Administration and big insurance companies rewrite the rules on the guaranteed health care protections that people depend on because no family should be forced to choose between helping a loved one get better or going bankrupt. These junk plans don’t have to cover prescription drugs, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, maternity care, and people with pre-existing conditions. Instead of expanding junk insurance plans that would take away this coverage and protections for people with pre-existing conditions, we need to protect Wisconsin’s access to quality, affordable care.”

In June, Senator Baldwin led a letter to the Trump Administration signed by 44 other Senators urging the Trump administration to halt the expansion of junk insurance that could threaten access to quality, affordable care for Americans, especially those with pre-existing conditions. In March, Senator Baldwin introduced legislation to block the rule and guarantee protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
