Baldwin Releases Statement on Trump Illegally Clawing Back Bipartisan-Approved Funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin released the following statement after the Trump Administration announced it’s attempting to cancel $4.9 billion in Congressionally-approved funding in a so-called “pocket recission.”

“This action by the White House is illegal, plain and simple. When Congress passes bipartisan government funding bills, it’s the President’s job to faithfully implement that funding. Once again, Donald Trump is operating like he’s above the law, bypassing Congress, and doing whatever he wants. That’s not how this works. Today, he’s gutting funding for foreign aid, but what’s next could impact any one of our states – hurting families, small businesses, veterans, public health, and the list goes on,” said Senator Baldwin. “So, this is a moment of truth for my Republican colleagues: will they stand up to Trump’s illegal power grab, or are they just going to let him act like a dictator and shred the constitution? It doesn’t have to be this way – Democrats are at the table ready to pass our bipartisan funding bills, but our Republican colleagues need to join us and get serious about respecting our three co-equal branches of government – not just respecting Trump.”
